The Stories Inside
Dreamscapes 2010 Oil on canvas Dreamscapes is a series based on significant personal dreams in early childhood and some of later in life. I drew on the stories of Catholic Saints as a conduit to tell my dreams and expand the visual content of my paintings. Every painting is adorned with a touch of gold leaf, which symbolised 'par excellence' in Christian Art of the middle ages. The tales associated with each Saint intertwine in some way with all of my dream's stories. Click on any image for the story. |
Whales 2005 Oil on Canvas The message in these paintings centres around the ecology and severally, the human savagery towards whales. A series of seven paintings, these are my personal visualisations of humankind's systematic killing and all-too-often cruel incarceration of every type of Cetacean, in a quest to find sources of food, energy and entertainment. |
Turtles 2001
Oil on board A series of ten, painted in 2001. At the time I was fascinated by American Artist, Mark Tansey and his powerful monochromatic oils. Although my works have a red imprimatura (base colour), the rest of the painting is rendered just by tone i.e adding black or white to a single colour. In this series I have used either blue or green as the primary colour. It was a test to my drawing skills, as using a full colour palette can often be more forgiving of mistakes. Monochrome can deliver a different emotion to that of a picture of full colour, much like that of photography. The first four paintings ,Birth, Life, Death & Irony were a set, however were sold singularly. The overall story behind each painting is in their individual caption. |
Frogs 2000
Oil on board A series of eight . These are the result of an initial thought to paint frogs just for their colour and beauty. However, as I began researching frogs and toads, I discovered a fascinating world of superstition, mythology and scientific facts, which I ended up incorporating into the final images below. |
